Vibe coding

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI and accepting the code it writes without reading it, judging only by whether the result seems to work.

Select any words here to ask your Maestro about them.

The app you vibe coded says March sales were $58.0k; the register says $52.0k. March had $3.0k in refunds. Both read the same file. What did the app do?

One store, six months. The app and the register read the same transactions file. Example data.

Where it comes from: Andrej Karpathy named it in February 2025: you tell the AI what you want, accept every change and, when something breaks, paste the error back for it to fix, without reading the code.

What it's good for: trying an idea in minutes: a weekend app, a prototype, a tool just for you. An AI agent like Claude Code does the work from your prompt.

Where it breaks: with data, a bug doesn't crash: it gives a number that looks fine. So before you sign off on a number from code you didn't read, ask for a unit test with an answer you already know.

Practice it in Ask for the test up front, where you ask for the code along with the test that checks it.

How it's used

A vibe coding session

sales-app/

  1. $ claude
  2. > Make me an app that reads transactions.csv and charts sales by month. You describe what you want, in plain English, not how.
  3. ● Write(app.py)The agent writes all the code.
  4. ● Bash(python app.py)It runs it and opens the chart.
  5. marked: Done: the app charts sales from January to June.If it looks right, you accept it. That's vibe coding: you judge the result, not the code.
For a quick idea or a prototype, it works great. Before you put the number in a report, ask for the test: a tiny case whose answer you already know.

When to look closer

It runs with no errors

Before you use the number

  1. marked: python app.py → runs, no errors

The app runs with no errors and the chart looks fine. How would you know it adds up what it should?

Example

You: What does "Vibe coding" mean, in plain words?

Your Maestro: I'll explain it with a case of yours: it sticks better than a definition. What tool just for you would you vibe code?

Asking about: Answers from the page "What should I check in a table before cleaning it? Build a problem inventory"

  • AI agent

A program that pairs a language model with tools, such as terminal commands and files, to carry out a task in several steps: it reads its context, acts, looks at the result and repeats.

  • Claude Code

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI agent that works on your computer: it reads your project's files, runs commands and makes changes over several steps, asking your permission for what matters. You use it from the terminal, the desktop app or editors like VS Code.

  • Prompt

A prompt is what you write to an AI model to ask it for something: the question or instruction, plus everything you give it to work with, like data, examples or the format you want back.

  • Unit test

Giving a piece of logic (a formula, a function) an input whose correct output you already know, and checking that it returns that.
